Phacinating Phacts: Believe it or not, photobooths have been around since 1889! The first ‘modern’ photobooth, however, was patented in 1925 by Anatol Josepho, a Russian immigrant to the US. They rose to popularity during World War II as soldiers and their gals used them as momentos of special times together and apart. Often found in corner drug-stores, they were coin-operated and required chemical processing to complete the image. They were big, cumbersome and sluggish, but still had the ability to bring out the ‘wacky’ in everyone. Even today, we can still find photobooths in most malls across North America, making memories for everyone who drops a coin and makes a phunny phace!
